They took us safely from our hotel to the Makoko community and brought us back without any issues. Once inside the community, they walked us around, explained everything clearly, and made us feel comfortable and welcome. It was eye-opening, different from anything I’ve experienced before, and definitely something worth living at least once. Highly recommended for anyone looking to truly understand Lagos beyond the surface.

It was eye-opening to see this vibrant and resilient community up close, but also heartbreaking to learn about the government’s plans to demolish more houses, which would leave countless families homeless. Their flexibility was also a standout feature; they went above and beyond by arranging a driver to take me to a separate location that wasn’t part of the original itinerary. From the very beginning, I booked a reservation for the Makoko Tour last minute but they were sure to accommodate me and also waited patiently for me to be ready as they picked me up from my hotel. The tour was very thorough and I was impressed by Benjamin’s knowledge of the community as he guided me and couldn’t help but notice how beautiful Makoko is even though the community is less fortunate, the people are resourceful, kind, welcoming. Please attend this tour and find it in your heart to give love and resources to the community if you have it to give. Samap Travels were extremely professional, timely, reliable and offer many other tours. I would book with Samap again every time.

Summary: This tour was one of the highlights of my trip to Nigeria and the best one I attended. The person giving the tour was the son of a community leader in the town and did an excellent job showing me around, explaining about their community and hopes for the future. I went on a Sunday so got to hear the vibrant church services but not see the kids at school. If you want that latter experience, I’d recommend choosing a weekday. The price was expensive (about 200 US dollars for about 90 minutes in the community) and I hope that was due to a large portion of that is going back to the community to help with their efforts to improve children’s education rather than most going to the tour agency. My one disappointment is I wish I had been invited into their church especially after tipping the church leader after being asked to do so. I suppose I could have asked but as hospitality wasn’t extended in that part, it felt rude to force the issue.

The congregation, dressed in their best despite the dire circumstances, sang with a fervent hope that seemed almost defiant. Children sat attentively, their eyes reflecting both innocence and a harsh reality. The juxtaposition of faith and despair was heartbreaking. In the face of relentless hardship, their collective prayers felt like a poignant cry for a better tomorrow, echoing through the fragile walls of their sanctuary.
